Castor), slight solder strengthening to left-hand side of claw, good very fine Estimate £ 450-550 Approximately 155 New Zealand medals dated 1845-46 were awarded, of which approximately 62 were issued to H.M.S. Castor, 30 of which are recorded as known (Naval Medals 1793-1856, K. Douglas-Morris, refers). Robert Hawke, born Stoke Damerel, Devonport, 1822; joined the Royal Navy as Boy Second Class, 1838; served in H.M.S. Castor, from 1843; served in H.M.S. Bellerophon during the Crimean War and took part in the bombardment and siege of Sebastopol (medal and clasp and Turkish Crimea); served in H.M.S. Russell during the Baltic Campaign (medal); Captain of the Foretop, October 1855; transferred H.M.S. Exmouth, 1858; advanced Bosun´´s Mate, April 1860; served as Stoker Petty Officer in H.M.S. Indus, until 1866, when he was discharged from the service. Provenance: Hawke´´s medal group is recorded as being sold by Sotheby May 1896.
