x Indian Mutiny 1857-58, two clasps, Relief of Lucknow, Lucknow (Thos. Forward, Capt´s Cook. Shannon.), traces of brooch marks to reverse and edges, pawn broker´s mark in reverse field, therefore nearly very fine Estimate £ 400-500 Thomas Forward, born Devonport, 1819; joined the Royal Navy as Landsman, 1838; served as Ward Room Cook in H.M.S. Implacable, from March 1839; he served as Gunner´´s Cook and Gun Room Cook in H.M. Ships Hecla and Retribution; he gained entitlement for medals for the Baltic and the Crimea with the latter; he was appointed as Captain´´s Cook to H.M.S. Shannon, February 1857, and served as Captain Peel´´s cook throughout the Mutiny until April 1858 when Peel died and Forward was removed from duty; later service included in H.M. Ships James Watt, Severn and Tenedos; he was finally pensioned 30.11.1876. Provenance: Captain K.J. Douglas-Morris, R.N., Collection
