A Fine Waterloo Medal to Sergeant B. Verity, 1st Foot Guards, Killed in Action at Quatre Bras, 16.8.1815 Waterloo Medal 1815 (Serj. B. Verity, Grenadier Guards.), good very fine, with original steel clip and ring suspension Estimate £ 6,000-7,000 Sergeant Benjamin Verity, born Shipley, Yorkshire; enlisted Grenadier Guards, 1796; served with the regiment in Spain, 1808-09, and was present at Corruna, 16.1.1809; served in Lieutenant-Colonel the Honourable H.P. Townshend´´s Company, 3rd Battalion during the Waterloo Campaign, and was killed in action at Quatre Bras, 16.6.1815. The Guards Division under Cooke had suffered heavy casualties as they emerged from Bossu Wood at Quatre Bras. They came under intense infantry fire and were attacked by the 6th Lancer Regiment of the French 2nd Cavalry Division. The Guards were caught advancing in a line across open ground by the French Cavalry and were forced to flee back into the woods. Verity´´s Waterloo Prize Money was paid to his widow Mary. The published transcription of the Waterloo Medal roll gives the recipient´´s name as ´´Benjamin Venety´´. This is at variance with the vast majority of the recipient´´s papers which give his name as ´´Benjamin Verity´´, including the listing of payment of the Waterloo Prize Money to his widow ´´Mary Verity´´, this is further supported by the details upon the medal itself.
