Gds.), generally very fine (4) Estimate £ 440-480 M.M. London Gazette 11.10.1916 19211 L./Sjt. J. Rowlett 4th Bn. G. Gds. Second Lieutenant James French Rowlett, M.M., served during the Great War with the Grenadier Guards on the Western Front, from 6.11.1915; Rowlett´´s Battalion were in action on the Somme during August-November 1916, in particular: in support of the failed attack on The Quadrilateral, 12th September; the attack towards Lesboeufs, three days later, when the Regimental History notes ´´heaps of dead Germans´´ as evidence of recent fighting; and when they moved forward from Bernafay Wood and were attacked on the 25th September, when the Regimental History notes over 150 Germans killed with the bayonet. Rowlett was commissioned Temporary Second Lieutenant, Northamptonshire Regiment, 13.11.1918.
