New Zealand 1845-66, reverse dated 1860-1861 (J. May, Gunrs. Mate, H.M.S. Cordelia), minor solder strengthening to left-hand side of claw, minor edge bruise, good very fine Estimate £ 450-500 John May, born Devonport, Devon, 1833; service in the Royal Navy including in H.M.S. Swift, Amphion, Edinburgh, Cambridge, Impregnable before being borne on the books of H.M.S. Cordelia, April 1857-April 1862; Gunners Mate 1859. Approximately 29 New Zealand medals were awarded to H.M.S. Cordelia, 19 of which are recorded as known in Naval Medals 1793-1856, K. Douglas-Morris the appearance of May´´s medal now makes it 20. Of this number 3 are recorded with undated reverses, 1 with the reverse 1860, and the rest dated 1860-1861.
