R.N.); Naval General Service 1915-62, G.V.R., one clasp, Iraq 1919-1920 (J.24369 W.A. Rapley. L.S. R.N.); Africa General Service 1902-56, G.V.R., one clasp, Somaliland 1920 (J.24369. W.A. Rapley, LG. Sea. H.M.S. Clio.), contact marks throughout, nearly very fine (5) Estimate £ 1,800-2,200 J.24369 Leading Seaman William Augustus Rapley, born Bethnal Green, London, 1896; joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class, 1913; he served throughout the Great War, including in H.M.S. Weymouth (Light Cruiser), 23.6.1914-31.12.1915; at the outbreak of the Great War the Weymouth was sent to the Indian Ocean to participate in the hunt for the Emden, she subsequently served as part of the squadron tasked with blockading the Konigsberg in the Rufiju River (German East Africa), February-July 1915; the latter´´s Captain was forced to scuttle his ship; Rapley served in H.M.S. Clio from 28.10.1919. Rapley was 1 of only 8 to receive the Naval General Service ´´Iraq 1919-1920´´ clasp in combination with the Africa General Service ´´Somaliland 1920´´ clasp.
