Three: Bombardier S. Emmerson, Royal Field Artillery, Lost at Sea 23.10.1915, When the Transport Ship Marquette Was Torpedoed by a German U-Boat off the Coast of Salonica 1914-15 Star (59043 [sic] Bmbr: S. Emmerson. R.F.A.); British War and Victory Medals (59093 Bmbr. S. Emmerson. R.A.), extremely fine, with Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque ´Samuel Emmerson´, card case, Parchment Scroll and addressed boxes of issue ´Mill St, St Oysth, Nr Colchester´, and two Record Office enclosures (lot) Estimate £ 120-140 59093 Bombardier Samuel Emmerson, born Colchester; entered the Egyptian Theatre of War 6.4.1915; he embarked in the liner Marquette (Atlantic Transport Company) for Salonica, 19.10.1915. The Marquette was carrying the ammunition column of the 29th Division and New Zealand Stationery Hospital. On 23.10.1915, Lieutenant Commander Waldemar Kophame, when in command of U-35 sighted the Marquette 36 miles south of Salonica, and ordered the crew to fire with haste at the troopship. She took considerable damage from the torpedo attack, but remained afloat. The troops on board the Marquette were made up of 22 officers and 588 other ranks, mostly Royal Field Artillery. The total loss of life, including Bombardier Emmerson, was 128, of whom 11 were nurses, 88 troops and 29 crew. The survivors were picked up by British and French patrol boats, but Emmerson´´s body was never retrieved.
