A Most Interesting and Rare Group of Four to Able Seaman W.J. Copestake, Royal Navy, Taken Prisoner by the Red Army during the Allied Intervention Period of 1918-1919 1914-15 Star (217160 W.J. Copestake, A.B.,R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (217160 W.J. Copestake.A.B. R.N.); Royal Humane Society, bronze, unsuccessful (William J. Copestake. RN 28th July. 1909.), good very fine, with a recent comprehensive typed account of the recipient´s Naval career (4) Estimate £ 300-350 Naval M.S.M. London Gazette 16.9.1919 217160 Able Seaman William John Copestake , R.N.(PO.), born Leytonstone, Essex, 1876; enlisted in the Royal Navy 1901; jointly awarded the Royal Humane Society with Stoker James Carter when at 1pm 28.7.1909 Mr L.W. Worth slipped and fell into the Wei Hai Wei Harbour, both recipients dived in but failed to find him. Served in various ships including H.M.S. Attentive (light cruiser) from 23.3.1918-23-7.1918, during the latter period she took part in the Zeebrugge Raid, and was despatched to Murmansk and the White Sea to support the White Russian Forces after the Bolshevik Rebellion of 1917. On 21.7.1918, while taking part in expeditions ashore, Able Seaman W.J. Copestake was captured by the Red Army. He was released via an exchange, and repatriated in May 1919.
