Hansell R.H.A. 91035568 Battery Sergeant Major Louis John Hansell, M.M., a native of Chelmsford, Essex; served during the Great War with "J" Battery Royal Horse Artillery, attached 5th Cavalry Brigade on the Western Front from 15.8.1914; the 5th Cavalry Brigade took part in the retreat from Mons, where "J" Battery was part of the rearguard concentrating at Bonnet; the Battery were in action again at Loos in October 1917, when Hansell went on to win his M.M. for putting out an ammunition fire in the heat of battle, ´´The enemy shelled the gun position from 8am till 7pm with 15cm howitzer and 20cm howitzer - the battery position was very much knocked about and number six gun pit had a direct hit on it completely destroying the gun and setting light to a good deal of ammunition -Sergeant Durham and Corporal Hansell did very good work under the command of Lieut. Borthwick in putting this ammunition out.´´ (J Battery War Diary, entry for the 5th October 1917, refers); the Battery Diary entry for the 11th of October confirms the award was for this action, ´´Sergeant Durham, Corporal Hansell, Corporal Butler and Gunner Saunders awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in action on the 4th and 5th.´´
