India General Service 1854-95, four clasps, Burma 1885-7, Burma 1887-89, Chin-Lushai 1889-90, Lushai 1889-92 (119 Pte. F. Lock. 2-R, S. Fus.), impressed in later sans-serif capitals, nearly extremely fine Estimate £ 250-300 119 Lance Corporal Francis Lock, born Portsmouth, Hampshire, July 1865; enlisted in the Royal Scots Fusiliers at Durban, South Africa, January 1882; departed immediately for India, landing on the 23rd January; saw action in Upper Burma 1885-89, in the campaign against King Thebaw, and the subsequent operations to counter unrest in the area; served on attachment with the Government Telegraph Department as part of the force under the command of Lieutenants Swinton, Cole, and Watson, to relieve the forts of Aijal and Changsil which had been attacked by the Lushai tribe, October to November 1890. He left for Calcutta at the end of November without permission, presumably preferring the bright lights on Chowringhee to the hills of the North East Frontier; the following year was struck down with Malaria, and spent three months recovering in a Rawalpindi hospital; Lance Corporal, March 1892; struck down a second time with Malaria, May 1892; Discharged August 1892 as a result of this infliction, after 10 years and 233 days with the Colours, his entire career spent soldiering in India. Medal issued in India to the Director General of Telegraphs 1.12.1894, and re-issued to the recipient, 3.4.1895.
