Wax study on slate of a portrait of Richard Duppa, by William Wyon, c.1828, bare head left, white wax, slate inscribed with circle, overall diam. 62mm., diam. of area in wax 49mm. Estimate £ 100-200 Richard Duppa (1770-1831), artist and author, published 1790 ´The classes and orders of the Linnaean system of Botany´, and ´Life and Literary works of Michelangelo´, published in 1806, which included all his known poems. The finished medal by William Wyon (BHM.1322) has this portrait on the obverse with the legend richardvs dvppa. llb, and attributes of Papal authority within a wreath on the reverse. This alludes to Duppa´s publication, in 1799, ´A Journal of the most remarkable occurrences that took place in Rome upon the subversion of the Ecclesiastical Government in 1798´. The reverse of the medal is dated mdcccxxviii.
