Large Army Gold Medal, For Barrosa, a fine 19th Century copper-gilt copy, Obverse: Britannia seated to left, laurel wreath in her outstretched right arm, Reverse: a laurel wreath, within this the title "Barrosa" and the date "MDCCCXI" in relief, virtually mint state, set in lunettes, with gilt swivel suspender and riband buckle, by T.B. Baliey, Coventry, Regd. Oct.10.1856 Estimate £ 300-400 This is a copy of the unique large Army Gold Medal for Barrosa (15 small Army Gold Medals and one large Army Gold Medal awarded for the action at Barrosa, 5.3.1811). The original of this medal was awarded to Brigadier-General (later General) William Thomas Dilkes. The medal was not only unique in that it was the only large Gold Medal awarded for that action, but also because the Gold Medals for that action were the only ones to have the reverse details "Barrosa - MDCCCXI" in relief, the Gold Medals awarded for all other actions having the reverse details engraved. Provenance The Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum.
