Sudan The Dongola Expedition 1896 An interesting trio of Taxed covers showing single, double and triple rates, one addressed to the Editor of the Graphic, another to Roddy Owen who died of cholera at Firket on the first leg of the Re-Conquest, together with a photocopy of his letter on regimental stationery notepaper; comprising 1896 (1 Apr.) 5m. stationery envelope front (small faults) to London, marked "Field Service, no stamps procurable", cancelled by bi-lingual Wadi Halfa c.d.s., showing boxed "t", "5d/f.b." h.s. deleted by blue crayon and "7 1/2d/f.b." h.s.; 1896 (30 June) unstamped envelope to London, showing bi-lingual Wadi Halfa Camp c.d.s., boxed "t" and "5d/f.b." h.s.; and 1896 (8 Sept.) envelope to England, marked "Dongola expeditionary force" and "No stamps available", showing Wadi Halfa Camp, boxed "t" and "i.b./2 1/2d" h.s.
