Sudan The Nile Expedition 1884-85 1884 envelope with letter written between 14th and 21st December from Lt. Gore Anley to his father Col. Anley in Kent, marked "Active Service no stamp", posted at Hanak, showing Wadi Halfa c.d.s., boxed "t" with "21/2d" h.s. alongside and, on reverse, Alexandria and arrival datestamps; the envelope with recipient´s note at top left and red ink "13" at lower left. The letter gives a fascinating account of traversing the 3rd Cataract. Photo Estimate £ 600-800Note: Lt. Anley was seconded to Dennison of the Canadian Contingent at start of the expedition, and later governor of a Sudan province. He was prominent in all the campaigns and later became Brigadier-General and Head of the Essex Regiment
