x Cape of Good Hope 1855-63 white paper, 6d. pale rose-lilac with just clear to large margins, neatly handstamped with large part strike of "cancelled" obliterator; light crease at right otherwise fine and of good colour. S.G. 7, £9000 Estimate US$ 6,000-8,000Note: In August 1861 the printers, Perkins, Bacon & Co., provided six examples of each stamp in their possession to Ormond Hill (eldest son of Sir Rowland Hill) for members of the family. These fascinating stamps and the story behind their appearance, have been fully described by Peter Jaffé in his book "Cancelled". Three examples of the 6d. are recorded and these may have been treated as three square pairs receiving a single central cancellation.
