London Gazette 25.7.1916 Chief Engine Room Artificer, 1st Class, George Frederick Cockrell, O.N. 268235. On the 24th April 1916, the Murray (commanded by Lieutenant H. Taprell Dorling) along with the other Harwich destroyers (the Medea and Melpomene, later joined by the Milne), engaged with three enemy Torpedo Boat Destroyers steering North East off Zeebrugge. Their pursuit encroached within 16,000 yards of the Coast, and once within range the German shore batteries opened fire upon them. The Melpomene was hit in the engine room, however the shell remained un-exploded, whilst the other boats were also hit. The Murray and the Medea continued to take the fight to the German boats, forcing them back under the cover of the shore batteries.
