R.N.), contact marks, edge bruising, very fine Estimate £ 1,800-2,200Provenance Glendining, 12.12.1937 Robert Welch served as Lieutenant in H.M.S. Experiment during operations on and off the coast of Egypt, March 1801. A three clasp medal to the same recipient is now in the Douglas Morris Collection. Commander Robert Welch entered the Royal Navy 1794 as First Class Volunteer in H.M.S. Galatea; took part in the expedition to Quiberon 1795; transferred to H.M.S. Foudroyant 1798, and witnessed the surrender of La Hoche and other ships destined for the invasion of Ireland; in February 1800 assisted during the blockade of Malta at the capture of Le Généreux and Ville de Marseilles, and in March the same year after a desperate conflict, at the capture of Le Guillaume Tell; nominated Acting-Lieutenant in H.M.S. Experiment, December 1800, he commanded the boats of that ship at the landing of troops in Egypt, 8.03.1801 (Sultan´s Gold Medal); served in the Channel and West Indies, at the Cape of Good Hope, in South America and the Mediterranean; Senior Lieutenant 1806; First Lieutenant 1810; Commander 1836
