BURMA Prisoner of War Mail Outgoing Mail 1943 (May) "service des prisoners de guerre." card from Gunner C. Ward at Moulmein Camp to England, showing despatch and arrival censor cachets, upon arrival redirected and with despatch c.d.s. over the U.K. censor cachet; some creases and soiling though very rare, being from a member of the "British Battalion". Photo Estimate £ 400-500 Note: When the Japanese captured Padang in Sumatra on 17 March 1942 the prisoners included about 500 British troops who had escaped from Singapore. They became known and the "British Battalion" They were sent to Mergui, Tavoy and Moulmein to Thaubyuzayat to work on the Moulmein-Bangkok Railway In January 1944 Gunner Ward was sent by rail to Can-Chana-Buri near Bangkok and by May 1944 to Saigon During two years in Burma and Siam about 150 of the "British Battalion" died on the Railway
