A French Military Pilot's Unofficial Badge A fine yellow metal brooch, fabricated in two parts, in the form of a flying eagle, the back stamped FIX and with a pin-fitting Estimate £ 500-800 This badge was originally produced by the Bijou Fix Company, makers of costume jewellery, in 1916. At that date, no pilot's brevets had been issued to French airmen, and the eagle brooch, once discovered, became extremely fashionable with aviators. Contemporary photographs of pilots frequently show them wearing it, although it remained entirely unauthorised. The style of the eagle bears a remarkable resemblance to the one worn as a sleeve-badge by pilots of the Royal Naval Air Service and later by the Royal Air Force.
