Henry I, Penny, 1.38g., type XI, Exeter, Alwine, large artistic crowned bust left, wearing robe and holding sceptre, [.]enri r, rev. double inscription around cross pattée, outer inscription divided by four quatrefoils, alpin[.] on excestr (BMC -; N.867; S.1272), small official edge snick, weak on parts of legend, otherwise as struck with a clear portrait, very fine, excessively rare, a new type for Exeter (one of two known) Estimate £ 1,250-1,500 The moneyer Alwine was unknown to Stewart ('The Exeter mint and its moneyers', R P V Brettell collection, 1970) and has only recently been recorded for type X (Spink Numismatic Circular, July 1989 no.4058, ex Thames Exchange). The Pimprez hoard adds two new types for the moneyer, type XI (this coin) and type XIV (lot 401 below)
