Haiti?, Gourde, 21.2 g., an 1810 Joseph Napoleon 20 Reales, Madrid mint, with central piercing (1811), fine, rare, but with many cuts or adjustment marks to face and reverse shield prior to piercing Estimate £ 200-300 On the 27th June 1811 an edict was promulgated to cut holes in the centre of “Gourdes” (Dollar size coins) to try to prevent them leaving Haiti; the resultant ring was to pass at the value of the original whole coin. The weight reduction was to be 1/5th, and this coin weighs almost exactly 80% of the original complete coin.
