Custer, George Armstrong. U.S. army officer and cavalry commander in the Civil War and the Indian Wars; killed with all his men at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. Autograph Letter. One page, on Galt House, Louisville stationery, Sept. 3, 1872. Writing to his wife Libbie, Custer begins "My precious darling. Your expected letter came to day". Custer's writing is bold and clear but hard to read. The letter is unsigned and possibly is page one of a longer missive. The back is a full-page, printed ad for the Louisville Industrial Exposition 1872. Fine; also torn segments of the Presidential Document raising Custer to the rank of Major General, 1865. Top (sides and piece rouletted cut) with eagle vignette, blue blind embossed seal, Recorded notation April 20, 1865 in red ink with signatures in black and red ink; and lower segment (all sides rouletted cut) with partially printed legend handwritten "[George] A Custer" brevetted to Major General 'for meritorious services at the battle of Winchester and Fisher's Hill, Virginia"; also bottom segment of a Presidential document - large flags and arms vignette, President Andrew Johnson's autograph signature above along with Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton.
