GIROLAMO SANTACROCE (1498-1533)
Jacopo Sannazaro (1458-1530). Medal, ca. 1520. Bronze, 35mm. ACTIVS SYNCERVS, Head left wearing laurel wreath, rev. Nativity scene alluding to his poem De partu Virginis. Hill Corpus 350.
"Actius Syncerus" was the academic name of Jacopo Sannazaro. Poet, humanist and epigrammist, Sannazaro is best known for his pastoral romance "Arcadia". Written in 1480 (but not published to 1503 or after), the work introduced the theme of Arcadia into European literature. Sannazaro wrote his epic poem "De partu Virginis" in 1513, which was published in 1526. He was later known as the "Christian Virgil". The medal was commissioned by Isabella d'Este and produced before March 1524 - when it was mentioned in a March 20, 1524 letter by Pietro Summonte to Marcantonio Michiel. Pierced top and bottom. A Very Fine old cast.
