François I (1494-1547), King of France 1515. Medal, after 1535. Bronze, 39mm. FRANCISCVS.I.FRAN-CORVM.REX, Bust ¾ right in contemporary attire, rev. CHRISTIANAE.REIP.PROPVGNATORI, Unicorn left in a hilly landscape dipping its horn into a stream, spear, halberd and sword at left. Pollard (NGA 615) notes just two recorded specimens. Armand III, 242B; Kress 537. The National Gallery example appears to be the model for this piece. An Extremely Fine later cast.
