Leonello d'Este (1407-1450), Marquis of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio Emilia 1444. Medal, Ferrara , made in 1444 to commemorate the marriage of Leonello d'Este to Maria of Aragon. Bronze, 97mm. Bust left in embroidered tunic, GE R AR above, LEONELLVS MARCHIO ESTENSIS across, D.FERRARIE.REGIE.ET.MVTINE below, rev. On a rocky crag, a lion standing right regards a scroll of music shown to him by a cupid, square behind - the musical lion a pun on the ruler's name: Leonello ("little lion"), signed .OPVS. / PISANI. / PICTORIS. upper right, Roman date on column. Hill 32. Some old pin scratches in field, yellow-brown patina. A Very Fine later cast.
