Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta (1417-1468), Lord of Rimini, Fano and Senigallia 1432. Medal, dated 1446. Bronze, 81mm. Straight lip variant. *SIGISMONDVS.PANDVLFVS.DE.MALATESTIS.S.RO.ECLESIE.C.GENERALIS, Bare-headed bust of Sigismondo in profile left, wearing surcoat over cuirass, rev. Fortitude seated on a throne the sides of which are formed by two elephants, holding a broken column in both hands, M.CCCCXLVI below. The elephant, with the motto "Elephas Indus culices non timet" (The Indian Elephant does not fear mosquitoes - Pliny) was a device of the Malatesta family. Hill 179. Slight casting wave across the top of the sitter's head. Possibly an early or contemporary cast. Extremely Fine. Ex Munzentrum Rheinland, Sale 189, September 11, 2019, lot 5651.
