Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta (1417-1468), Lord of Rimini, Fano and Senigallia 1432. Medal, dated 1446. Bronze, 82mm. *SIGISMONDVS.PANDVLFVS.DE.MALATESTIS.S.RO.ECLESISE.C.GENERALIS, Bare-headed bust of Sigismondo in profile left, wearing surcoat over cuirass, rev. Fortitude seated on a seat the sides of which are formed by two elephants, holding a broken column in both hands, M.CCCCXLVI below. The elephant, with the motto "Elephas Indus culices non timet" (The Indian Elephant does not fear mosquitoes - Pliny) was a device of the Malatesta family.
