Bowcher for Spink & Son, VICTORIA • DEI • GRA : BRITT : REGINA • FID : DEF : IND : IMP MDCCCXCVII, crowned, draped and laureate bust left, IN COMMEMORATIONEM ANNI REGNI in left field, LX, with oak leaves behind, rev. Royal arms in the centre, below THE BRITISH EMPIRE A.D. 1897 and a vignette containing four clasped hands, inscribed PEACE LOVE AND UNION, border containing fifty shields of British Colonies and Protectorates, edge plain, 161.15g, 77mm, 12h (Eimer 1816; BHM 3511), lustrous and pleasingly toned with hints of petrol blue and ochre, especially to legends and edge of devices, virtually as struck, from the year Spink and Son received its Royal Patronage from Her Majesty Queen Victoria
