Great Britain. 71st Highland Light Infantry Officer's Dirk. Ca. 1880's. By Phillips & Co., 13 George St., Hanover Square, London. Black wood carved hilt with basket dressing and gilt studs, crossed swords on front, carved thistle on back. The pommel cap of the dirk, fork and knife have a topaz-colored Cairngorm stone with gilt trim and high-relief thistles. The etched, saw-back 11 ½" blade has two fullers; battle honors on the front - ROLEIA…SEVASTOPOL, CENTRAL INDIA; etched thistles, crown over Victoria cipher, regimental horn and maker's name on back. Gilt mounts on the black leather scabbard, trim with high-relief horn encircling "71", and thistles. Attractive and in excellent state.
