William IV. King of Great Britain and Ireland (1830-1837). A modest and reform-minded king, he was the only monarch to survive the democratic spirit sweeping Europe. Upon his death, his niece Victoria became queen.
Interesting third-person Autograph Letter Signed as "The Duke of Clarence," 2/3 page, 4to, Bushy House, [London] "Sunday Afternoon," no precise date. He announces that "The Duke of Clarence desires Mr. Davenport to attend the Deputy Lieutenants and Magistrates for the County of Surrey on Wednesday next the Fourth instant to answer any questions relative to Henry Burket drawn for the Militia unless the Act exempts him. The meeting is at Chertsey." Partial split at horizontal fold repaired with strip of scotch tape, a few spots of foxing, otherwise very good. From 1758, each English parish had to make a roll of its adult males eligible for militia duty, from which a certain number were conscripted. The English militia was intended for defense in case of invasion and, more commonly, to suppress riots and supplement the constabulary.
