Wilde, Oscar (1854-1900). Irish playwright, novelist, essayist, and poet. Best remembered for "The Picture of Dorian Gray", and "The Importance of Being Earnest". Imprisoned in 1897 as the result of the successfull prosecution of the father of his lover for libel. Evidence exposed in the trial led to his own arrest and trial for gross indecency with men. ALS, 8vo Regent Hotel, Royal Leamington Spa [Warwickshire]. November 12. No year. "Please admit two to my lecture this Evening. Reserve seats. Oscar Wilde. Nov. 12." Wilde appears to have been a frequent visitor to the spa, which is mentioned in some of his works, most notably "The Importance of Being Earnest". Lightly age toned and water stained, but still very good. Also included is a magnificent panel photograph of Wilde by Sarony, 1882. Titled "OSCAR WILDE," 7 ½" x 13," with black and gold border. Wilde is seated, wearing a fur trimmed overcoat, facing front with his elbow on his knee.
