Wharton, Edith (1862-1937). Pulitzer Prize winning American novelist and short story writer. DS, Partially Printed receipt in French for 51 50/100 francs. Maisons de Convalescence des American Hostels for Refugees. Paris. May 13, 1917. To Oscar Lichtenberg. Very fine. In recognition of her tireless efforts to help refugees, Wharton was one of the few foreigners in France allowed to travel to the front lines during World War I, and she was appointed Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the President of France. She lived in France for the rest of her life.
