Wells, Herbert George (1866-1946). English writer best remembered for his science fiction works including "The Time Machine", "The Island of Dr. Moreau", "The Invisible Man" and "War of the Worlds". ALS, 2 pages, 8vo. Spade House, Sandgate. June 1, 1904. To Low [after receiving Low's book, The Governance of England]. "My Dear Low, Your book comes to hand on one of my bad days. I'm in bed. I'm out of concert with myself and the universe. I have no doubt I shall read it later with the interest and sympathy I always find for what you have to say. At present I can only see that you don't mention my work at all in the high discussions & I've got no philosophy at hand for that emergency. Yours very sincerely. H. G. Wells." Archivist's penned notation at the top of the first page. There is a stain along the vertical fold. The page with the H. G. Wells autograph is problem free. Also included is a 7 ½" x 9" photograph of Wells seated and writing with a fountain pen, inscribed to "Dawnie," and signed "H. G. Wells.
