Martineau, Harriet (1802-1876). Philosopher, writer and contemporary of Charles Dicken, Martineau was an intelligent, independent woman who successfully supported herself as an author. She was a pioneer in observational sociology, and a champion of women's rights. ALS, 2 pages, 8vo. Ambleside. July 27. To an unknown recipient. Very fine condition. Also included is a carte-de-visite of Martineau, photographed by Moses Bowness, seated in a chair with her head down as she embroiders. "Thank you for the papers you have sent me, which are very interesting. I hope to see Mr. Davitt…" (Perhaps Michael Davitt, who wrote Leaves from a Prison Diary.)
