Kipling, Rudyard (1865-1936). English short story writer and novelist. Nobel Prize winner. His important works include The Jungle Book, Gunga Din, Kim and The White Man's Burden. ALS, small card, 4 ½" x 3 ½." Both sides were used by Kipling. To Hammond [John Hays Hammond]. "…I wish to goodness you could give me a small hint, as to how, with my pen, I could contrive to most good to Rhodes in his fight "South under." Sometimes I think an interview and sometimes a poem would be best, but I'm blowed if I precisely know, please enlighten me….Best regards to you and Mrs. Hammond. I am as ever, Rudyard Kipling." John Hays Hammond was an American mining engineer who worked for Cecil Rhodes. In 1896 he reported that there was no gold in Mashonaland or Matabeleland. This played a role in encouraging the Jameson Raid, an abortive raid on the Transvaal. Kipling met him on board a ship leaving from Southampton. The corners are rounded, but otherwise very fine. Interesting content, worthy of a premium bid.
