France. Armand-Jean du Plessis, Cardinal Richelieu, 1630. Bronze. 76.5 mm. By Jean Warin. Bust of the Cardinal right; .ARMAND VS IOANNES CARD.DVX.DE RICHELIEV, rev. France in a baroque chariot, driven left by Fame sounding trumpet, Fortune chained at rear, Victory flying right above to crown France; TANDEM VICTA SEQVOR, signed WARIN .1630. in ex. Jones 182-3. Appears to be an original cast from moulds that were reworked. Some clouds from the first mould have been removed/changed on the reverse, while there has been an addition to the signature, a cross has been added on the obverse. Deep caramel brown. Lovely high-relief, a superb work. Choice Extremely Fine.
