Distinguished himself during the Mexican War in which he was twice breveted; captured and imprisoned with other CSA troops during the Civil War he was exchanged for the nephew of Andrew Johnson; appointed lieutenant colonel in the adjutant general's office, CSA in 1864; best remembered for his detailed and critical report on the woeful conditions at Andersonville Prison Camp and the Confederate mismanagement and horrible neglect of Union prisoners there (its commandant, Captain Henry Wirz was later hanged for war crimes). * Copy of Indenture, Sept. 24, 1861 for property in D.C. and MD; * Jan. 28, 1862 ledger statement of account for Lt.
