Civil War: Lot of documents, letters and sundry: * ALS by Benjamin Butler, as Rep-MA. One page, House of Representatives letterhead, small format, Washington, D.C. May 31, 1874. Butler a Union major-general during the war was much despised in the south during the Union occupation of New Orleans; he later became governor of the Bay State. Butler writes Miss Hoole regarding the war pension claims of her mother. Light adhesion on back; * Special Order No. 178, Union Army. One page, Hilton Head, Port Royal, S.C., April 1, 1863. Thomas Archer, NY Vol. Eng. Corps. is detailed on Special duty by Maj. Gen. Hunter. A true copy signed by Henry M. Dalrimple, 1st Lt. and Adjutant. After the Union seized Hilton Head in 1861 with one of the largest fleets ever assembled in North America, it became an important base of operations in its blockade of southern ports; * Letter giving a favorable assessment of the character of Pvt. Thomas Archer. One page, folio, Office of the U.S. Tax Commission, Beaufort, SC, Feb. 29, 1864; * Descriptive Roll of Animals belonging to Capt. James F. Hart's Company Horse Artillery, CSA, South Carolina. Folio, pale gray watermarked paper; * Letter to CSA Secretary of War James A. Seddon (misspelled by the author as "Seaden"). Two full pages, Richmond Dec. 28, 1863. The writer complains in detail that Major Gen. Ransom has disbanded a regiment that the author has raised. The letter continues but the additional page(s) is missing. A few small rents along the centerfold; * CSA tax form (No. 3) on profits made on staple goods during the year 1862 - flour, corn, bacon etc. Has not been filled out. Age toning; * CSA Ordnance and Ordnance Stores list delivered at Oglethorpe Barracks for transport to Hyde Island (flour, props for chassis, gun chocks…). Vertically split in two; also Speech of Hon. J.S. Green of MO on the Constitution of Kansas, 1857 pamphlet and National Art Palace receipt for pictures, Cincinnati, Feb. 28, 1865. Very Good to Fine. [9]
