Lot: 1279

Wales. The Black Sheep Company of Wales. A trio of 1970 Welsh Railways and Bridges Sets: each with 20, 50 Pence, 1 and 2 Pound notes. Each a different color, portraying a different Welsh Railway on the front, and the Britannia Bridge on the back. The 2 Pounds note of one set without 'SPECIMEN' on front, but instead stamped "CANCELLED - 1 JUL 1971'. Issued by Welsh banker Richard Hugh Williams of Llandudno for his private banking venture. While not official legal tender, the notes he produced in different series between 1969-1972, held similar status to the promissory issues of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Williams went bankrupt in 1978. A single set brought $111 (including BP) in a 2012 Heritage currency sale. Crisp Uncirculated. [12]
