Founded by Hamilton Disston to handle his enormous holding of Florida land - he was sold over 6000 square miles in Florida in 1881 at just 25 cents an acre which saved the State from bankruptcy as it could not pay interest on its large debts. He became a celebrity overnight and proceeded to form other companies, including this and the Atlantic and Gulf Coast Canal and Okeechobee Land Company. Following the panic of 1893 things became very difficult with money in very short supply and Disston was broke. He shot himself in the head in 1896. (see lot 3249).
