Parthian Hegemony. Orodes II (57-38 BC). AR Drachm. Ekbatana. 3.53 gms. Diademed and draped bust l., Nike standing behind crowning Orodes, rev. Archer (Arsakes) seated r., monogram below. Sellwood 42.2, Shore 281var. This coin was most likely struck in honor of Orodes victory over his brother Mithradates IV. After the brothers murdered their father Phraates III in 57 BC. Mithradates was made king of Media, but was then deposed by his brother. Mithradates fled to Syria then returned to invade the Parthian lands. He was briefly restored to power but after being besieged in Seleukeia on the Tigris by Orodes' forces he was captured and slain. Orodes II earlier parricide is well-glossed over in the reverse legend which proclaims him as "King of Kings, loving his father…". Rare. Good metal quality. Extremely Fine.
