Jean Paul Getty (1892-1976) became the richest man in the world through his vast oil empire; born into wealth, he made his first million on his own by age 19; all but disinherited by his millionaire father, he invested his own money brilliantly and expanded his oil holdings until he had grown his personal fortune to nearly $4 billion. The present certificate was issued soon after Getty returned to the oil business after a brief stint as a millionaire playboy in California.
