Auction: 313 - Numismatic Collector's Series - Ft. Worth, TX
Lot: 1547
Republic of Ireland, $10 6% bond, 1866, #5590 / 31590, payable "Six Months from the acknowledgement of the Independence of the Irish Nation," eagle with Irish flag on rock, portraits of Theobald Wolfe Tone and Thomas Davis, black with red and green underprints, edges a little trimmed, wear, toning and soiling, ink blot on back, VF. The Irish independence movement, started by Wolfe Tone and carried on by Davis, gained particular strength in the 1840s, when the Great Famine made life under British rule unbearable. Over 1.5 million Irish emigrated to the United States, making it an excellent place to sell bonds such as this to Irish Americans who dreamed of a free homeland.
