Texas: David Ayres American merchant and missionary (1793-1881); emigrated to Texas from New York in 1832, bringing what are believed to be the first Bibles imported to the territory for distribution; his friend William Travis left his son, Charles in the Ayres´ care during the war for independence, and they gave him a home when Capt Travis was killed at the Alamo. Choice Manuscript Slave Document Signed "David Ayers" at close, also signed by his wife, "Ann M Ayers," 1 page, 4to, on blue paper, Galveston, September 29, 1851. David and Ann, "in consideration of eight hundred Dollars...sell and deliver unto Hannah Pierce a certain negro girl named Matilda aged about twenty five years and her child aged about nine months. Both are Sound both in body and mind and Slaves for life..." Toned edges, light fold wear, VG. American enthusiasm to add Texas to the Union in 1845 was greatest in the South, where a vast and prosperous new slave state would help preserve regional dominance in the US Senate.
