Hawaii. 1882 Haiku Plantation 1 Rial Token. NGC XF45. Medcalf TE-15. Highly desirable not only to Hawaii enthusiasts, but also largely to traditional American collectors as a result of its inclusion in the widely circulated "Redbook". The Haiku Sugar Company, as it was officially known, was located on the island of Maui, east of Wailuku. The one rial denomination, borrowed and adapted from the well-known Spanish real, when issued was equivalent to approximately one day´s wages. Per Medcalf, the Haiku Plantation tokens are considered "the most artistic and well struck of the early metal tokens." Given the radiant obverse design, it´s not hard to see why. A wonderful preserved specimen that presents a true opportunity to obtain a scarce piece of this charismatic island´s agricultural history.
