Auction: 26015 - "The Treasure of the Eagles" Collection of Albania - Part I
Lot: 3025

(x) Austrian Albania (1797-1806; 1814-1918)
Cattaro
1843 (Jan. 27). Registered entire letter from the Austrian Consulate in Shkodër to the Imperial Consul of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in Venice, showing on the reverse the corresponding negative handstamp of the Consulate, with a signed notation and a manuscript red cross below indicating disinfection at the Lazaret of Castellastua, before being forwarded to the Austrian Post Office of Cattaro (Kotor), where it was struck with the Austrian “Cattaro” linear postmark, together with the “5. Feb.” datestamp, "raccom." denoting registration, and the “Turquie.” handstamp indicating origin from the “risky” territory of Ottoman Albania, all applied at upper right on the front. At Cattaro it was embarked on an Austrian Lloyd vessel to Trieste (13.2), arriving in Venice on 16.2, with both d.s. on the back, also showing the manuscript double rate of 12 + 6 = 18 kreuzer, paid at the port of Cattaro for the maritime Cattaro-Trieste carriage (12 Kr.) and the inland transport Trieste-Venice (6 Kr.). The finer of two items recorded bearing this combination of postmarks, which were very harmoniously applied in this instance, making it a delightful exhibition item.

note: The correspondence of the Austrian Consulate in Shkodër, after the postal charges had been prepaid by the Consulate, was entrusted to a private postal company managed by Christian traders, who transported the mail on horseback (from a stable located in the Drotcin Kale neighbourhood) to the neighbouring Lazaret of Castellastua in Montenegro (under Austrian administration).
