"A85": 1863 (4 Aug.) soldier's concessionary cover to London, bearing G.B. Q.V. 1d. Stars cancelled by a faint strike of "shanghae" code "C" c.d.s. and by a good strike of the "A85" barred oval with red London Paid c.d.s. (1.10) below; the reverse bearing another Shanghae c.d.s., Hong Kong (8.8) and London (1.10) c.d.s. Sent by Sgt. Major Yaxley, Staff Corps, China and correctly countersigned by the commanding officer; some soiling and tears to the back flap. A very important cover being the only recorded example of a G.B. adhesive cancelled by both Shanghai and P & O postmarks. Photo

Note: Another cover from the same correspondence was included in the Richard Chan collection (illustrated in Webb) which only bore the Shanghai c.d.s.
