"A81": 1864 (11 June) opened-out seaman's envelope to Cornwall, bearing G.B. 1d. Stars (faded) tied by a fine strike of the "A81" barred oval; sent by John Richards, a seaman on H.M. Gunboat 'Cockchafer' and countersigned by the commanding officer, the reverse bearing Hong Kong despatch c.d.s. in blue partly overstruck by St. Germans arrival c.d.s. (7.8); some minor soiling. Very scarce, only a handful of covers recorded. Photo

Carried on the P&O 'Orissa' which departed Hong Kong on 13th June. H.M.S. 'Cockchafer' was prominent in apprehending pirates off Kwangtung
