A Great War Italian D.C.M., and Western Front M.M. group of seven to Sergeant C. Robinson, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, who re-enlisted in 1938 seeing further service with the Royal Engineers

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid. He did splendid work with a bombing section and later, when his platoon Officer was killed he remained behind with a runner to carry his body back to his lines. He displayed great coolness and able leadership throughout.'

'At MOUNT SORREL near YPRES on June 7th 1917 this N.C.O. showed great bravery and resource when attacking the hostile trenches. His objective was a strong point which he overcame - capturing what was left of the garrison consisting of one Officer and 13 men. Later on he brought in other prisoners.'

Charles William Robinson was born at Alfreton on 24 September 1894 and joined the 11th Service Battalion of the Nottinghamshire an Derbyshire Regiment, he remained with this unit throughout the Great War. He first entered the war in France on 27 August 1915 and was awarded his Military Medal for his action on 7 June 1917. Robinson was later sent to the Italian theatre with the 11th Battalion, arriving in November 1917 and it was here that he was awarded his D.C.M.. The Commanding Officer Ty-Col. C. E. Hudson was also awarded a V.C. for his action at Asiago on 15 June 1918 during the Second Battle of Piave River.

When the campaign was concluded in Italy, the 11th Battalion returned to France in September 1918 with the war's conclusion on 11 November 1918. Robinson was noted as being a coal miner in the 1921 Census, however with the possible conflict looming he re-enlisted into the Royal Engineers at Alfreton on 23 March 1938 and saw wartime service in Gibraltar. Robinson was discharged for the second time on 21 January 1943. He applied for his Second World War Medals in June 1960 and died in March 1985.
