'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He went forward in an attack to a timber emplacement, and finding that the enemy inside had a machine gun trained on the door he shot three of them and captured the emplacement. By his determined and courageous action he prevented the attack from being held up, and enabled his company to advance and capture all their objectives.'

John George Finney was born at South Kirby, Yorkshire in 1888 and was originally a coal miner, he attested into the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment at Mansfield on 11 November 1914. He originally joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 29 August 1915. Finney returned home on 20 December 1915, staying there until he joined the British Expeditionary Force on 26 September 1916. The Regiment was involved in the latter stages of the third battle of Passchendaele in October 1917 and Finney was involved in the thick of this action and his actions resulted in the award of the D.C.M..

He suffered both a gun shot wound to the thigh and left buttock on 4 October 1917 and remained in France until 9 October 1917. He returned home on 10 October 1917 and was first sent to the Norfolk War Hospital, Thorpe, before being moved to the Woodbastwick Hall Convalescent Hospital in Norfolk on 17 November 1917 until he was discharged from there on 13 December. Finney did not see any futher overseas service as a result of his thigh injury and was discharged on 14 December 1918. He is further entitled to a Silver War Badge (B312769); sold together with copied service papers and medical reports.
